Roll out five times, fold further and integrated sensors: Samsung's new OLED displays

Samsung's display division shows numerous new screens at SID Display Week 2023. Some of the new products could find their way into smartphones in the next few years. They would then be able to be enlarged, have an entire display as a sensor or be folded 360 degrees.

5x magnification, measure health data and fold further

The "Rollable Flex" can be stretched from 4.9 centimetres to 25.44 centimetres in length. This corresponds to a little more than a five-fold magnification. According to Samsung, previous extendable or rollable displays only increase in size by a factor of three.

With the "Sensor OLED display", Samsung saves manufacturers from having to install additional sensors in the smartphone. The screen recognises fingerprints across its entire surface. If you place one finger of your right hand and one of your left hand on the display, it should be able to measure health data such as heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels.

Existing displays on folding smartphones can be folded by up to 180 degrees. The new "Flex In & Out" from Samsung, on the other hand, has a movement radius of 360 degrees.

Other new products that can be seen at the trade fair in Los Angeles are the "Flex Hybrid" and the "Slidable Flex Solo". The hybrid is designed to combine folding and rolling technologies and enlarge the Solo tablets from 13 to 17 inches.

SID Display Week is an industry trade fair. Other manufacturers could register their interest in the new displays with Samsung and then install them in the future. Whether and when there will be real products with the new screens is currently unclear.
