Meta announces the Quest 3 VR headset
The new VR headset from Meta is coming in autumn. The Quest 3 is said to be lighter and more comfortable than its predecessor and will cost around 500 US dollars.
On Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Instagram account the company announces the Quest 3. The new VR headset will be available in autumn in a 128-gigabyte version and "a larger version for those who need more storage space". The small version is expected to cost around 500 US dollars.
According to the announcement, the graphics performance will be doubled thanks to a new Snapdragon chip. The resolution will also be increased. Meta will reveal how much at the Connect event on 27 September.
The Quest 3 should be compatible with the Quest 2 games. The predecessor model will continue to be available at a reduced price. From 4 June, the Quest 2 with 128 GB memory will cost around 300 US dollars, while the 256 GB version will cost 350 US dollars.
Compared to its predecessor, the Quest 2, the Quest 3 has been visually slimmed down considerably. The controllers of the Quest 3 have also been redesigned. The outer tracking rings have been omitted. This should make the controllers feel like a natural extension of the hands. TruTouch haptics are integrated into the new Touch Plus controllers. This should make action more perceptible. The announcement doesn't go into any more detail - you'll have to wait until 27 September for that.
The reason why Meta is already announcing the Quest 3 is probably obvious: Apple is set to unveil its long-awaited mixed reality headset at WWDC next week. With this announcement, Meta presumably wants to show that they have something up their sleeve.
