Mate X3 and P60 series: Huawei presents four new smartphones

Huawei must continue to do without Google services on its smartphones. Nevertheless, the manufacturer is causing a stir with technologically impressive innovations. However, we won't be able to try them out in Europe for a few months.

Huawei Mate X3: waterproof folding

Huawei has made its latest foldable smartphone waterproof. The Mate X3 has IPX8 certification. This means it has been tested for 30 minutes in one metre of water. This is not a matter of course for a smartphone with so many moving parts.

The Mate X3 has two displays. This makes it similar to the Galaxy Fold 4 from Samsung, for example, and not the Mate Xs 2. With the Xs 2, Huawei only uses one screen that folds around the outside of the device. The biggest advantage of this variant is that no fold can be seen or felt when unfolded. It is difficult to judge the size of the fold on the Mate X3 from a distance after the presentation in China. The inner display of the new foldable smartphone measures 7.85 inches diagonally. The outer display is 6.4 inches in size.

The thickness figures for the Mate X3 sound impressive. Huawei speaks of 5.3 millimetres when it is unfolded and 6.3 millimetres when it is folded.

Huawei equips the Mate X3 with three cameras on the back. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels. The ultra-wide-angle camera with 13 megapixels can also take macro shots. The 12-megapixel telephoto camera has a five-fold zoom.

The 5060 mAh battery can be charged with up to 66 watts - wirelessly with up to 50 watts. Huawei has installed the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in a 4G version. In China, the Mate X3 also has a satellite connection.

P60 series: The best equipment for art

The smartphones from the P60 series also have the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the 4G version and can communicate with Beidou satellites in China. The Huawei P60 Art stands out visually and also has the best features of the three variants.

The Huawei P60 Art stands out due to the design of its back. The shape of the camera hump is particularly unusual. It houses a 48-megapixel main camera, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera with 48 megapixels. Huawei praises the outstanding capabilities of the cameras in the dark.

In the P60 Pro, Huawei replaces the ultra-wide-angle camera with a 13-megapixel sensor. In the P60, the resolution of the telephoto camera is also reduced to 12 megapixels. The front camera on all three smartphones delivers selfies with 13 megapixels.

Huawei has installed a 6.67-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2700 × 1220 pixels in all three P60 variants. The maximum refresh rate is 120 hertz. Huawei has received IP 68 certification for its housing. They are designed to survive at least one metre under water for 30 minutes.

The Huawei P60 Art has the largest battery at 5100 mAh. It can be charged with up to 88 watts via cable and up to 50 watts wirelessly. This also applies to the 4815 mAh battery of the P60 Pro. The battery of the P60 has the same capacity, but charges with a maximum of 66 watts via cable.

Price and availability

Huawei has initially only presented the new smartphones for the Chinese market. However, the company has already announced a launch event for Europe on 9 May. We should find out by then at the latest when which of the devices will be released and how much they will cost.

As the USA's sanctions against Huawei are still in place, the new smartphones are likely to be released without Google services. However, Harmony OS as the operating system will probably remain reserved for China. For Europe, Huawei has so far relied on the open-source version of Android and the EMUI user interface, including its own app store.
