It’s finally here, the first trailer for GTA VI. Here are all the details we get to see in its 90 seconds.
Twelve years after the GTA V trailer, the first video for its successor GTA VI has been released. Just like the last part, however, we’ll have to wait another two years until the game is actually released. So for the time being, we have no choice but to make do with the 90 seconds that Rockstar has made available to us in the form of trailer 1. Still, there’s already a lot to see in it.
What was already known from various leaks has been confirmed. Game six is set in the sunshine state of Florida, called Leonida in-universe – more precisely in Vice City. But unlike the 2002 game of the same name, set in the neon-tinged 80s, GTA VI is set in the present day. Love Is A Long Road by Tom Petty scores the trailer, perfectly bridging the gap between both games. GTA VI will be released in 2025 for PS5 and Xbox Series, and once again, the PC community will have to be extra patient.
Lucia and her partner are our main characters. The Latina is initially seen in an orange prison uniform while talking to her probation officer. It isn’t clear whether this takes place before or after a chase in which she’s holding a bundle of dollar bills. Nor whether you can control both protagonists. But I’m assuming that won’t be the case. Bank robberies and other criminal activities are also likely to be among the main occupations of this Bonnie and Clyde-inspired couple.
The capital is a densely populated metropolis – with skyscrapers, harbour facilities and sprawling sandy beaches. According to Rockstar, GTA VI is «the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series». The level of detail even exceeds that of the already impressive New York from Spider-Man 2. Take the beach scene, for example. Hundreds of people – and dogs, like a Chihuahua – are all going about their own business. Hopefully consoles can actually cope with this.
There’s also some outlying districts, with massive highway bridges stretching across crystal-clear water. Water seems to play a greater role again, a wide range of ships can be seen. These include luxury yachts, container ships and propeller boats racing through overgrown swampland. Two armed individuals are perched on the latter. The fact that this isn’t anything special in GTA VI could, however, indicate this as a hunting option. There are more than enough alligators around, as shown in two scenes where one is fished out of a pool and another waddles into a store. Just Florida things.
The legendary Florida Man, here Leonida Man, meme is just as typical. The popular character is often used when an unidentified state resident does something out of the ordinary. For example, one news banner states that a person was swallowed up by a tornado. Now he’s demanding the city buy him a new suit. The trailer is teeming with such quirky characters. A woman is filmed twerking on the roof of a moving vehicle, captioned #have.a.vice.day. An elderly lady in a nightgown armed with two hammers goes viral as a supposed neighbourhood watch officer. And one senior citizen waters his garden in a thong, carefree. Just Florida things. Just like the alligators, Rockstar has lifted all these examples from real people and events practically one-to-one.
Many shots are shown as video clips in portrait format. Allusions to TikTok, Instagram and co. are omnipresent, just like the typical GTA satire of American culture. An advertisement for Cure Emotions is emblazoned on a billboard, a drug that supposedly suppresses feelings. Weazel News, the Fox parody, is also back in the game, as is Pisswasser, GTA’s iconic beer brand.
Other typical GTA activities include a visit to a strip club, wild concerts and car tuners to pimp expensive hotrods. Don’t expect any familiar brands, but the similarities to real-life models are unmistakeable. You can clearly make out a modern Porsche 911 Cabriolet parked behind a Ferrari Testarossa. The latter bears a licence plate with the name Cheetah, the same vehicle as in GTA Vice City.
Drifting contests as well as races are almost certainly among the side activities. The Thrillbilly Mud Club can be seen celebrating a mud party, the background packed with pimped-up beach buggies, pickups and a monster truck driving through the picture.
Biker gangs could be possible enemies. One TV clip shows the police trying in vain to stop a group on motorcycles and quad bikes. As Weazel-News headlines the incident, «Dirt-Bike Dirt-Bags».
All in all, it looks like the multimillion-dollar GTA fans have been dreaming of. Recognise any other details? Let me know by commenting below.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
