Product details
It features a compact and lightweight design that is ideal for modern, mirrorless full-frame cameras. The filter diameter of 67 mm is the same as that of all other current Tamron lenses for Sony E-Mount
(full format). The optical design incorporates several special glass elements that guarantee excellent imaging performance of the lens. The very short close-up range of only 85 cm further extends the photographic possibilities. The lens uses Tamron's newly developed linear motor focus mechanism VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), which enables fast and very quiet autofocus. The lens body is weatherproof (sealed against moisture), and dirt and fingerprints on the front lens can be easily removed thanks to the water and grease-repellent fluorine coating. The lens is also compatible with Sony's proprietary camera features, such as Fast Hybrid AF and Eye Detection AF, and offers a range of advanced features that ensure ease of use and fantastic results.

When stopped down by one stop, the Tamron 2.8/70-180 mm Di III VXD delivers very high resolution.

... On the APS-C sensor we measure very similar tendencies. At 70 mm and aperture 2.8 the contrast is too low, but the edge drop is extremely low. Stopped down, the lens delivers a very good result over the entire image field - with slightly more edge fall-off. At 112 mm all values are slightly worse, this is especially true for the contrast at f/2.8, but stopped down this focal length is also very usable...

- For a fast telephoto zoom lens, the Tamron lens performs very well. This applies to resolution, vignetting and distortion.
- The limitation to 180 millimetres is somewhat annoying. Unfortunately, the new Tamron also lacks an optical stabiliser.
As a particularly affordable and pleasingly powerful alternative to direct competition from Sony, the new Tamron lens is worth a closer look when deciding which lens to buy. If you want to save money in your wallet as well as space in your camera bag, you've come to the right place.
