  For simple enough and energy-saving

  For MY (600GB) photo collection absolutely sufficient, unfortunately you cannot install certain extensions that recognise more than faces (Ram).
  Also good as a file server.

  Good for Backups

  I use it for TimeMachine-style system backups; works great.
  It is a bit noisy when under load, and I think a few rubber pads on the inside would help; probably not an issue if used with an SSD.
  Can also be configured to shutdown and restart only when you need it. more
