Inspired by Provence: Ava & May scented candle review

The Provence perfumed candle from Ava & May captures the tantalising fragrance of French lavender fields harvested in early August. Could this be my new, long-awaited summer fragrance for my home?

I recently tried the Santorini and Limone di Sicilia scented candles to bring a Mediterranean vibe into my Zurich apartment. Unfortunately, the Santorini fragrance was more autumn than summer, while Limone di Sicilia made me think of the winter. That’s why I chose to return to Provence in terms of scent and tested the perfumed candle of the same name. It aims to reflect the ambience of the region in south-eastern France. Think fragrant fields of flowers, convivial evenings and a laid-back lifestyle.

The Provence scented candle is part of a popular collection by Ava & May – a German brand specialised in candles and other scented home accessories.

First impressions

Unlike the Santorini candle, this scented candle comes in elegant packaging, which makes it an ideal gift. What’s more, unlike the Limone di Sicilia candle, it comes in a bright purple jar reminiscent of lavender fields.

The wooden lid is a particular highlight. It serves as a handy little platform when the candle’s burning. When the candles out, you can use the lid to protect the candle from dust.

The fragrance

According to its description, the candle combines the aromas of lavender, lemon and rose. After lighting it for the first time, I can definitely confirm this. The fragrance is floral. It doesn’t smell exactly like lavender, but is pleasant and fresh. For me, Provence is a great fragrance for the bedroom or bathroom. I just think it's a shame that the fragrance disappears as soon as the candle’s blown out.

Appearance and quality

The candle’s made from environmentally friendly soy wax, and the wick’s made from cotton. If it’s evenly burned, it should last up to 40 hours. After just a few hours of burning, I can say that the wax evaporates evenly. No wax edges have started to form, so I’ll be able to enjoy it for a long time.

In a nutshell

A refreshing summer fragrance and a splash of colour

The Provence scented candle embodies how I imagine the calm and serenity of the French region. The candle has a subtle lavender fragrance and feels fresh thanks to the lemon aroma. If you enjoy natural and calming fragrances, this is for you. The Germany-based Ava & May brand makes its candles from plant-based soy wax, which makes for even burning for this design. In addition to its handy wooden lid, another advantage is the minimalist jar. It blends in with many types of interior design styles and will add a splash of colour to the room. The only drawback is that the fragrance isn’t very intense and doesn’t last particularly long.

Pro

  • Soothing, refreshing fragrance
  • High-quality wax
  • Practical lid
  • Bright colour

Contra

  • Fragrance too subtle depending on your taste
